Wake Up

“Wake Up”
I’ll wake up in the morning
Thankful for the air
For the grass
For the clouds
Isn’t it funny
It isn’t until we lose everything
We finally see through the nothing
Because I don’t mourn my blue car
The first new one I ever bought
I don’t mourn empty houses
With prime parking spots
I mourn the smiles of my children
When they can’t resist
My poorly executed jokes
I mourn the way your eyes lit up
When you admired me
Thinking I didn’t notice
I mourn the way
I used to laugh loudly
Sing like I was performing
And dance within your arms
Because I was never obsessed
With material things
Though you confused my frustration
With your mismanagement of your money
With a desire to spend it
I simply wanted to be included
In how our life was being built
And you kept setting us up
To be temporary
But this isn’t about you
This is about me
And all that I lost
And how I always knew what mattered
But even with all of those things
Precious
Sacred
Indispensable things
Now gone
I still wake up in the morning
Facing the dry cold
With a calm contentment
Because women are much wiser
Than you give us credit
And I can see so much more clearly now
Hoping one day
You’ll all come back to me
Knowing that for now
The air is enough
