“Past Lives”
I try to understand you
Even though you try to hide
You never believed I saw you
But as I see you turning into what you hated
I know you’re the little boy who blamed your mother
For leaving when she had to
The same reasons I had to face decimation
In order to survive
But you cared for the man
Who broke your family
Seeing how he struggled
To take accountability
Blaming others
Instead of apologizing
With actionable remorse
A twin to the darkness
You have growing inside
You’ve painted me the villain
Like your mother who never left you
Like the wife who never cheated on you
Like the first love you turned into an addict
Because you hold the power
You blame in others
You hold the answers but you still struggle to survive
You may have the power and the money
But I have the freedom
Of truth
In all of its pain
Strength in becoming better
In the face of shame
